ABSTRACT

To test the hypothesis that an increased plasma concentration of sialic acid, a marker of the acute-phase response, is related to the presence of diabetic retinopathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus [IDDM].We investigated the relationship between plasma sialic acid concentration and diabetic retinopathy in a cross-sectional survey of 1,369 people with type 1 diabetes. Subjects were participants in the IDDM Complications Study, which involved diabetic centers of four different hospitals in Lahore.
